Finding Flow in Repetitive Art Making

The InktoberTangles art challenge

The Zentangle community started the InktoberTangles challenge, inspired by Jake Parker’s month long art challenge Inktobercreated in 2009 to improve drawing skills and develop positive drawing habit.

If you are interested in the Inktober Official 2019 Prompt list, click here. The rules are simple, make a drawing in ink, post it (using hashtags), and repeat. You can see my Day 1 drawing @theaustincreativitycoach.com

The rules are a little looser for the InktoberTangles challenge. The only rule the Zentangle community follows is using the tangles prompt list. Draw a tile a day using the daily listed tangle or combine the tangles into a larger piece. The prompts list was created by Stephanie Jennifer, CZT21 click here to view the list and links to step outs of all tangles and hashtags to find inspiration.

My Day 1 InktoberTangles2019 Tile

This year I’ve been experimenting with backgrounds using a traditional 3.5 inch Zentangle tile and applying watercolor with brushes, sponges, stencils, and anything else I can think of. The watercolor background tiles are the basis for this years challenge.

Here is my Day 1 InktoberTangles2019 tile using the tangle “Printemps”, this is an original tangle introduced by Zentangle founder Maria Thomas. I used the watercolor area as my combined “border” and “string” and filled the area using a .005 and .05 black Sakura micron pen, and a 08 white jelly roll pen. Shading areas with a black and white graphite pencil. The final result was a complete surprise and a great meditation practice.

Official 2019 Inktober Tangles Prompt List

Develop your own drawing habit by trying a new tangle a day. If that seems to daunting try doing 31 days of Printemps. It’s an easy tangle to use. Remember the goal is to have fun, improve your skills, and develop a drawing practice that you find relaxing and fun.
